Broken bottles
About 1956 at Beacon Ave. - We used to pay a deposit of 5 or 10 cents on bottles from milk and pop. This was a good way to recycle and gave us motivation to earn money to collect bottles tossed around the neighborhood.
One time Ma sent me up to the Lawson's store on Union Ave. with 2 half gallon bottles (along with their own metal carrying rack) to buy some milk. It was only a short walk, but, somehow I managed to drop and break the empty bottles. I returned home crying about the event. She was not as concerned about it as I was and gave me the extra money to return for the milk.
